I'm a worrier. Just ask my sister.
With some (or a lot of) encouragement from my friend Connie, several months ago I signed up for the Rock Cut Hobo 25k Trail Race. 25k is roughly 15.5 miles.
It's been many years since I've visited the park, but I know that it's heavily wooded, with beautiful trails. I've been so excited, and a little nervous, to do this long race. I've waked a few half marathons over the past few years, but not something this long. And those were road races; paved surfaces. Trail races can put you onto just about any surface. Dirt, grass, gravel...and always at least a few tree roots across the path.
The big race was yesterday, Sunday September 15th. But a few days prior, we had torrential rains across a large area of northern Illinois. That included the site of this race. Oh, and here at home too.
And the rain found a new route into our basement, through a window well. Sort of a waterfall feature into the finished area of our basement. Can you see where I'm going with this "worry" theme?

So, in addition to the basement ordeal (twice within 2 days) I was stressing about the trail conditions. I almost forgot to tell you that the race location had to be moved from Rock Cut State Park, due to bridge construction that got a late start due to flooding this Spring. Water, water everywhere!
The races were held at Deer Run forest preserve. It was a beautiful area, just not as heavily wooded as the park.

This race was a 3 event race. A Friday night 10k, Saturday 25k, and Sunday a 25k/50k simultaneously.
You could choose 1 event or all 3. We chose the Sunday 25k, since it's supported for more hours.
Want to see the photo that REALLY had me worried about the trail conditions? Take a look.
See???? The Kishwaukee river was rising rapidly during Saturday's 25k. Deeper with each the 3 race laps.

On Sunday morning the weather was chilly and very cloudy. Dark clouds. Still some thunder hanging around from the overnight deluge. Yeah. Worry about being struck by lightening during the race. Worry about what to wear. Will I ruin my clothing if I have to wade through knee high water? Wear my worst, old pair of shoes that don't have much arch support anymore? My new shoes feel great, but I don't want to ruin them. ETC, ETC & ETC.
Stop the worrying, already! OK?

Now, the big race!

Overnight, the race organizers created a completely different route for the Sunday races. Those people were amazing! A big thank you Rockford Road Runners!

Pre-race video. It was exciting and we were more than ready to get started!
I had soggy socks and shoes, but I didn't mind at all.
As the 3 of us went through race check in/packet pick up we realized that, since our last names all begin with the letter W, our bags were easy for the volunteer to find. That same volunteer later called us The Flying Ws, as we completed our first lap of the race. These volunteers were fun and so supportive!
This will be a long post with lots and lots of photos. You've been warned. :)
We had a great time. The running community here is SO supportive, encouraging and inclusive. There were so many times other participants gave us encouragement. Great job...way to go.....you've got this! I can't say enough good things about them. Hey, and our trio...The Flying Ws? Awesome!
Guess what???? Connie and I each won 2nd place in our respective female age groups. What an awesome surprise! The award is a railroad spike. When this race event was created, many years ago, the railroad still ran through the park and hobos hopped onto and off of the train, as it passed through the park. Hence the spike. :)

Wooohoooo! I can't even try to describe this entire experience. To be blessed with the physical and mental strength that this race required, I am so grateful. Especially at my age of almost 67 years. I adopted this active lifestyle only 6 years ago. Up until then I led a very sedentary life. You may know that I've walked a few half-marathons. In case you're wondering, that's 13.1 miles. All of those were road races. Paved paths or city streets. Usually a combination of both. Smooth surfaces.

A couple of months ago, my friends, Connie and Carol, and I decided we needed to do something different. Well, we heard about the Tiger 10 Miler. This is a local race, so only about a 20 to 25 minute drive away. Great! It's a trail race in a beautiful forest preserve. Yes, we know that trail races could be nearly any type of surface. Grass, dirt, gravel....a few tree roots. Hey, that sounded like fun! And we can do 10 miles. Heck, we've done 13.1, so 10 miles will be fine. Right?

I prepared. I trained. I bought a water-pack (a small backpack specifically designed to hold 50 ounces of water). I knew from past experience that I had to avoid getting dehydrated. This race did not provide cups of water along the route (a cupless race). They, instead, provided fill stations for us to refill our own containers/packs.

It began as a beautiful day, as you can see below in this pic I took pre-race.

I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive about the rough terrain because, due to an old knee injury, uneven surfaces can result in a sore right knee. Nothing to really worry about though.

To get to the point of this entire post...this was a tough race for me. THE most difficult race I've ever done. PERIOD. Heat. Humidity. Hills. And there was that 750 foot elevation gain, too. I would say that about 75% of the race was out in the open, on grassy paths through prairie land. In the sun.

Hot. Humid. Ten miles. Just a few shaded, forested areas. All of the course was beautiful and yet, grueling. I signed up for this. Paid for it, too. What was I thinking?

By about half way through the race, I was praying to just finish. Just, please, get me safely to the finish line. Truly, it took every ounce of strength I had, to get there. I was drained.

This was quite an experience. I'm glad that I did it, but I don't plan on signing up for this one next year. Ummm. No.
My finish time was much better than I expected. I was surprised!
And, second place in my age/gender group was an even bigger surprise.
By the way, there were only 2 of us women in this category (65 years to 69 years, female). But I'm still very happy about this finish! Hey only 2 of us "older" women even attempted this course. Go us!

Yesterday my racing/walking friends and I did The Great Pumpkin Run 5k race at Keller's Farmstand. We always have fun together and yesterday was no exception. Although the temperature wasn't too awfully warm for September, the humidity was very high. And the sun was shining. A pretty day but muggy.

We were encouraged to dress up for this festive race. I obliged,as you can see below. Tutu, tulle headpiece, pumpkin earrings and a bright orange tee shirt. I really had fun with this!
Oh, and I'm carrying a 3.5 pound pumpkin. We each earned some extra bling for carrying a pumpkin throughout the race...intact and always visible.
That's our race team in the above photo. These women are so much fun, and so uplifting.

In this kind of weather it's especially important to hydrate well before a race. Yes, I drank lots of water the day and evening before the race. But, on race morning I skimped on the water. How do I say this? Well, I wanted to avoid having to pee during the race. You know....no where to "go" during those 3.1 miles. I ate a hearty breakfast early that morning, but just a little water. Bad decision.

There are lots of early weekend mornings that I walk more than 3.1 miles before I even eat breakfast, or start drinking water. And I'm just fine. But the sun is just rising and the temps are much cooler then.

By the time I finished yesterday's 5k, I was spent. Feeling a little weak and very wrung out. VERY.
I knew what the problem was and I knew that it was my own fault. Duh. Dehydration. I grabbed my free bottle of water right after the finish line AND the free cup of cider. Ahhh. That helped a little, but I knew I needed more than that.

So, I followed my friends into the orchard's market building. They have lots of apples, cider doughnuts, kettle corn. All kinds of yummy stuff. But I was more interested in getting more water.
As I stood in the looooong like to the order and cashier line, I wondered if I could stand there long enough to get that much-needed water. I did it, because I had to...for the water.
As soon as I could I downed the first of the 2 bottles I bought, then drank the other one during our hour commute home. What a difference it made. I felt SO much better.

The point of this very long story is: please learn from my mistake and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate before and during prolonged physical activities in warm, humid weather. Especially in the bright sun.

And, while you're thinking about it.....REMIND me to do the same. Okay?

Thanks!
But, that's
what I wanted to do after completing my second Half-Marathon. Last
Sunday...April 23rd.
Wooooooooo hooooooo!

April
of 2016 my friend Connie and I did the Naperville (Illinois) Women's
Half Marathon. We loved it! So, as soon as registration opened for this
year's race (which was last spring), we "raced" to sign up. :) Pun
intended.

Then, last summer we told our walking/running
friends about the half and encouraged them to do it. "You have plenty
of time to train for it" we said. Well, eventually there were 7 of
us...pretty much our entire group...that registered for the race. Then,
all of a sudden, winter was winding down and race time was almost
here! Lots of training going on and a "just a bit" of nervousness.
Yikes!

It was a very different feel and completely
different dynamics doing this race with a group of friends. Different,
but wonderful! What a bonding experience.
The energy, the anticipation, the nerves, the encouragement, the praise.
Every time I remember this experience, I'm reminded how blessed I am to be surrounded by this group of women.

Want to see a few (or lots of) pics from half marathon day? I thought so. Okay!
The

cold. But the sun was shining and the temps rose pretty fast. Ideal
weather for a half.
I think there were about 2500 women doing the half and nearly 2000 in the 5k.
In total, almost twice as many as last year.
Five of us headed out for lunch after the race. It
was a day for "eat anything you want" for lunch. Splurge! I had a
burger with fries and it was DE-licous.
We sat there and talked
for a long time. Lots of laughter, too. We may have gotten a bit loud
occasionally. We got "the look" from a couple a few tables away.
Sorry, but not really. It was a very special occasion and we were still
pumped.
I still smile every time these memories pop into my brain. Like...right now.
Guess what? Our next race is two weeks from today. "Only" a 10k this time.
I'm
still amazed that I'm doing these races at this point in my life. No, I
am NOT bragging. A lot of people do half marathons.
I'm amazed
because just a 3-1/2 years ago I was 77 pounds heavier than I am now and
had several health issues. There was no way that I could have walked
even a 5k at that time. I have much to be thankful for and two of those
things are the ability and the good health to be able to do the
physical activities that I have come to love so much. And...if I hadn't
made the changes in my life that led me to where I am today, I may not
have been surrounded be these wonderful women...in last Sunday's
photos. God leads us in ways and directions that absolutely amaze me.
For that, I am so grateful.

Throughout the year I indulge occasionally in some sweet treats. A few simple carbs, now and then too. But just a few. No harm done.
Well, that time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is THE most difficult time for me to resist treats. They're at work, they're at holiday parties, they're everywhere!
This year I certainly indulged a few times too often. The result was a weight gain of 5 pounds. Oh my....that was difficult to write. Ouch!
I realized how VERY easy it is to give in to those old habits of "treating myself" to unhealthy foods. Too often. Bad habits, no matter from how long ago, are so easy for me to fall back into. I changed to a healthy eating lifestyle in August of 2013, so it's been a few years. But, oh how easy I can pick up those bad habits. At those times, it's easy to think of myself as someone addicted to food. It can be a crutch. It can be comforting. It can be so much more (or less?) than a source of nutrition!

My bathroom scale and I have not been buddies lately. BUT I'm working to change that. I've lost half of that weight gain and I'm working to lose the remainder.

I, mentally, beat up myself for gaining those pounds. I'm glad you couldn't hear those conversations with myself.
What if I can't lose those 5 pounds?
What if I gain more weight?
What if I, then, can't wear all the cute clothing I've bought? My favorite jeans especially.
Buy a bigger size??? No. Just...NO.

Eventually, I stopped that crazy whirlwind of negative and destructive thoughts. It took a while.

I'm sure I'm not the only person that gained a few, or more than a few, pounds over the holidays.
But, believe me, it's reason for concern and stress for someone like me. Someone who worked hard and made many lifestyle changes, in order to lose 77 pounds and get healthy. And working on staying healthy. Yes, it is work...and always will be. But it's very important work.

I know that I will lose those few extra pounds. I know how to do it; I've done it before. I'll do it again in the future...I'm sure. This will be a lifelong journey. And it won't ever be easy. But it IS doable and it IS worth it. So. Very. Worth. It.

Well, where do I even begin?
This blog post has been rolling around in my brain for so many months. I haven't known where to begin, but I knew I wanted to write it.

When I made the decision in August of 2013, to make changes to my eating and activity habits, I really had no idea it would lead me to where I am today. My primary goal was to lose weight and get healthier. Yes. I did that, and so much more.

You know that there is always a "before and after" photo, right? Okay, I'm showing you that. But, there are SO MANY other changes to me that one doesn't see in photos.

My "before" photo in 2013, as I began to change me. My "after" photo taken in April 2016 after my first half marathon.

I'm beyond happy that I've lost those 77 excess pounds AND kept them off for this long. Two years and 4 months, at this point. But I realize that I will have to continue making healthy choices for the rest of my life. Sometimes those choices aren't easy. Sometimes they're VERY difficult. Sometimes I stray a little and make the wrong decision. Oh yes, I have my weak moments. Moments? Ha! Make that "hours" or "days". But I've learned that when I go off track, I just have to tell myself that it's okay. It's temporary. No need for a pity party (well, maybe a short one).
Anyway...it was temporary. It's happened before. It will happen again. Stop it now and start over.
That philosophy has worked for me. My weight varies within a range of about 4 poumds

Now. The title of this blog post. Yes, it's so much more than a "before and after" photo.

Besides my appearance and my health, there have been so many other things that have changed as a result of my weight loss.

My self esteem - in addition to feeling good physically, I feel so good about myself. It took quite a while for me to see myself differently. That mental picture of myself looked a lot like the "before" photo for quite a while. I had to get used to the new me, and really come to terms with this version of me, to think of myself differently. It finally happened though. I'm so happy about that!

The activities I enjoy - I still love my paper crafting hobby; very much! But...I also love physical activities. Especially distance walking. It feels great to get outdoors and MOVE. I love the way it makes me feel...physically, emotionally and mentally. When I've been working at my desk for too long, my body lets me know it's time to get moving. On those days when I feel tied to my desk, with little time to spare, I feel deprived if I don't get some walking time. That time I spend walking is restorative and rejuvenating. I need it, mentally and physically. Actually, I need it spiritually too. I've found that my walking time is one of my best times for prayer.

Mentoring/advising/sharing - I'm really not sure what to call this one. During the time I was losing weight and still now, so many people have asked me for advice on losing weight. I am, in no way, qualified to give any expert advice on this subject. I'm happy to share what has worked for me, but I know that it may not work for someone else. It's flattering to be asked, I'll admit. I think each of us really has to educate ourselves on this subject and each person has to ask themselves why they want to lose weight. And, are they ready to make a lifelong commitment to these changes they're contemplating?

Comments from others - This one is really very interesting and occasionally confusing.
I've received many positive and encouraging comments and compliments on my physical appearance since losing all that extra weight. Of course, that's a real boost to my ego and it's fun.
When shopping for clothing, I'm still surprised when a sales person refers to me as "little" or "tiny". I shopped the plus size section of stores for so many years, so this is a complete turn around for me!
Now, occasionally someone will tell me that I'm too thin. These are the comments that confuse me.
I'm healthy, I feel great and I'm within the "normal" weight range for my height. And my doctor is pleased with my weight. Occasionally, when I'm told I'm too thin, I start to wonder if they're right.
I know that I look MUCH different than I used to. Many people were used to seeing the "before" Susie. Since losing weight, my proportions are different and gravity has had an effect on some areas of my body. Well...I'm not going much further with that subject. I'll just say that body does not look the same as someone my size who never carried that extra weight. Some areas may be a bit thin, but others have some "extra". So, I'm always going to be a bit out-of-proportion in comparison. Ah well. I'm just keeping it real here!
Most importantly, I'm happy (and my sweet and supportive husband is happy) with my "after" and that's what really matters.

As I wrap up this post, one other thought just came to mind. It has to do with how I think of myself.
My friend Connie and I walked a half-marathon together in April. It was my first and her 3rd (I think). After completing the race and taking a few photos, we headed over to the tent for snacks. Gotta get that "free" banana, right Connie??? :)
In front of the tent was a sign that said "For Athletes". Oh. My. Goodness. I am an athlete. Never, ever...ever had I thought of myself as an athlete. That was an "Aha" moment with a capitol A!

I still smile when I think of that sign. And I'm smiling right now. :)
And now that I stop to think about it...I smile a lot more these days.

Since I participated in a 5k race this morning, I have a photo to share. My friends and I met up at 5:45 am today, to head up to the race. The weather was perfect, around 58 degrees F. The sky was clear and the sun was just coming up. A blessedly cool morning for August in northern Illinois!
My friend Connie asked if I'd ever thought of doing one and she offered to walk it with me. Connie has run several half-marathon before, so it meant a lot to me that she was offering to WALK the entire race with me.
Immediately, I got so excited just considering doing a half with her. I knew I wanted to do it, but would I be ABLE to do it? Of course I could! But I knew I would need to train for it. I read all that I could find, to prepare myself for the race. Connie and I trained together, too.

Training is so important. We did a training walk, probably about 10 miles, a week before the half. This particular session taught us a lot. Hydrate more and EAT more during the walk. I had read about suggested snacks to eat during a long race and I took one snack with me. But realized, when I began feeling drained, weak, wrung-out...that I hadn't eaten enough.

For the half marathon race I made sure I took along more snacks. What a difference it made!
I felt good throughout the entire race. Of course I got tired, but I felt good. Never weak. And my recovery time after the half was quick. It was an amazing experience!

The race we chose, was the 2016 Inaugural Naperville Women's Half Marathon in Naperville, Illinois.
It was a sunny and cold morning on April 24. Just 45 degrees F. I was shivering while we waited for the race to start. Maybe just a little bit of that was nerves...but mostly cold. :)

Here's a pic taken just before the start.

All throughout the half marathon (by the way, that's 13.1 miles) there were volunteers handing water and gatorade. And there were "Volun-cheers". That's what their tshirts said and they indeed cheered us on. The place where it meant the most to me, was leading up to the finish line. Both sides of the track were lined with volunteers cheering and yelling for us. Encouraging us to finish. It gave me such a boost and I even had tears in my eyes. It's an experience I'll never forget.
Oh. By the way....Connie and I have already registered for the same race in 2017. Woooo hoooo!!!

Go for it. Do it. Whatever it is you really want to accomplish, you CAN do it.
A few years ago, when I was 77 pounds heavier and did no physical activity, no one could have convinced me that in 2016 I would complete a half marathon and love it!

Like most everyone else, my life has been full. Full of many things. But, let's talk about fitness friends, walking buddies...whatever you choose to call them. They are such a blessing to me!

Most of my fitness walking is done by myself, simply because my schedule doesn't coincide with those of my walking friends. But on those occasions when several, or even 2, of us can meet up to walk and talk...it brings me such joy. I love walking outdoors and enjoying it with friends makes it even better.

Since my previous blog post (yes, many months ago) my friends and I have done several 5k races. It was so much fun! Such a difference from participating in a race on my own. Until this year, I only knew these from church. Except one. We were neighbors many years ago.
Once we realized that we had this common thread of getting/staying fit, one thing led to another.

We've been racing together and having a lot of fun. These women are funny, motivating and supportive. Who could ask for more? Not me. :)

I'll share a few photos of what we've done so far this year. Some are from races and some from our group walks.
We've walked all kinds of weather. ALL kinds. We walked in a blizzard of blowing snow/sleet and very cold, last November in a 5k race. Connie and I walked about 8 miles early on a Saturday morning this spring. It was 24 degrees F and windy. Wow, so cold. Lots of mild, pleasant weather. We try not to go out in hot weather, but sometimes the weather gives us a surprising warmup as we're walking!

We have more races planned for this year. A 5k in early August, a 5k in early October and a 10k in late October. I can hardly wait! Oh. I'm still trying to decide whether I'm signing up for that late November race this year. Snow???

Hey, get out there and move. You'll be glad you did!
That's okay, but sometimes it sure would have been nice to have a walking buddy. Finally, one day at church, my friend Connie and I decided we should meet up and go walking together.

Oh yeah. The time and miles went by so quickly AND I had a great time. What a boost to my motivation, too. I highly recommend finding a walking partner!

Here's a pic from yesterday, when Connie and I finished a very long walk.

The temp when we headed out a 7 am was 24 degrees F, with a windchill
of 17 degrees. The big plus was...we had sunshine. Finally!!! Even
though the air was cold, the day was beautiful. I don't know if I would
have braved that cold air if I hadn't committed to this walking date
with Connie. I was determined not to back out. And...I'm so happy that
I didn't.

About a month ago, a couple of other friends from church asked if they could walk with us. You bet.
So we created a private Facebook page for all of us to use, just for coordinating weekend walks on the bike path. Who can go, what time...etc.
Here are a few pics of our walking group, from several different weekends.
It's SO good. And...this one takes just a little time to prepare. So many of the healthy foods I prepare are quite time consuming, so when I find the combo of easy, yummy and nutritious...the recipe is a keeper!

I made this salad last weekend and took it to work in my lunch throughout the week. It kept well and was just as yummy on Thursday as it was on Monday. HERE is the link to the blog post at Ambitious Kitchen where you'll find the recipe.

By the way, I followed my friend's suggestion and sprinkled some gorgonzola cheese on top and accompanied it with a fresh pear. Oh, so good!
I enjoy sharing with all of you...actually, maybe there are just a few of you readers! However few there are, I love blogging. :)

So! I have a really tasty recipe to share. Slow Cooker Gingerbread Oatmeal.
Yes...it's just as yummy as it sounds. It just so happens, it have a batch cooking right now and it smells soooooo good! In today's batch I added a chopped apple, some chopped walnuts and a few dried cranberries. Just because I could!

Here's a pic from the site The Lemon Bowl, where I found the recipe.

At first taste, I wondered if the flavors were too strong. The spices and molasses and all.
Ummm. Nope. After that first bowl, I was hooked. Of course I still add my usual toppings, as I do to ALL my oats. Sliced banana and a dollop of plain greek yogurt. A sprinkle of chia seeds and whole ground flax seeds.
Oats are a filling, hearty and nutritious way to start my day and I never tire of them. Yum.
This time I formed a race team. Several of my friends have never participated in a race and they really wanted to give it a try. They suggested I form a team...so we became the Sole Sisters race team.

Of course, I enjoy participating in races. I've talked about that on my blog in the past. But, racing as part of a team made it even more fun! There were 6 members in our team for the Autumn on Parade race, in nearby Oregon, IL. Some of us walked (yes, I was one!) and some ran. Some did a combination of both. Some of us kept passing other members as they switched from running to walking. Nothing like a little friendly competition!

I'll leave you with a couple of photos from race day. Fun times with fun friends!
Way back in August I signed up for the Gobbler Gallup 5k Race that will be held this Saturday, November 21st. Yeah, I know what the weather can be like in northern Illinois this time of year. But, I hadn't bargained for what the weather forecast is saying now. What have I gotten myself into???
Winter
Storm Watch in effect for all of N. IL and S. WI beginning Friday
evening. This could potentially be a big, first snow with totals over
6". Let's start planning now for travel during that time. Good news it
will be coming over a weekend. Looks like we are going to dive right
onto winter!
It is important to note that this is still 36 hours out, and this forecast could change.
But...I finally did. Guess what?
I love it! It tastes similar to some other squashes, but of course, the texture is different. After trying the recipe I'll link to, and liking it so much, I can think of so many other possibilities for using this tasty vegetable.

The recipe I tried is Tomato Basil Spaghetti Squash Bake. Just click through to go to the recipe on the site Alaska From Scratch.

First...I looked for some basic instructions for baking the squash. It was SO simple.
HERE is the link. I chose the oven baking method. Yummm. It was tasty just out of the oven, before making it into a casserole.

This photo of the finished casserole came from the blog where I found the recipe. That's because I forgot to take a photo of mine before cutting it into pieces to store in the fridge. Ooops.

Anyway, I hope you'll try this recipe. It's SO good!

I'm thinking that next time I make this, I'll add some chopped jalapeno peppers. Or some chopped spinach. Or mushrooms. See? Lots of possibilities.
Enjoy!
I see a lot of articles in magazines and online, sharing info and tips for running. But very rarely any info on distance walking. I did some searching and came across THIS PAGE that has some great information. It mentions Chi Walking, which I know nothing about, but all the other info applies to any of us who distance walk. Lots of great info there, so I hope you check out the link above!

I also want to share a quote I came across, that really spoke to me.

Yes. Sometimes going out for a walk, I look deeply inward.

Sometimes I pray.

It's a time to think about many things. Thinking about me, thinking about those I love, thinking about God.

I am so very thankful that I am healthy and able to walk long distances. I am truly blessed!
I knew this was going to be an especially busy weekend, so I went browsing for an easy, but healthy recipe. This time I wanted to use my slow cooker.

You would think that it would be easy to find something that fit all 3 requirements, wouldn't you?
Easy, healthy and in a slow cooker. Ummm. Not so easy.

But, I eventually found this. Slow Cooker Spinach and Mozzarella Frittata. Just click the link I provided, to get the recipe. I made one change to the recipe, by adding 1 jalapeno pepper, diced.

***edited to add: Another change I made. I used all whole eggs.

Here's a photo of my finished fritatta.

I thought it might be difficult to remove it from the slow cooker. But as you can see, I manged to loosen it then slide it out onto a plate. Oh, in case you're wondering. It is delicious!

I WILL be making this one again. Yummmmm.

If you try this recipe, please let me know what you thought of it. Just leave a comment here on my blog OR use the "contact me" option in the right hand side bar of my blog.

Her blog is titled MJ & Hungryman. I'm learning so much from her blog! And it's not only info about food. She also shares information about stress and anxiety, cortisol and gratitude.

That's just a few of the topics that she talks about. She also share recipes, links to additional information and recommends books. I've not read any of the books, so I can't personally recommend any of them. Anyway, she is a wealth of information and I love her writing style.

I'm sharing a few links to some individual posts that have really spoken to me.
Right???
*********Edited to add*******
Ack! I can't believe I created and posted my card making post to my personal blog, instead of to my card & crafting blog Procraftinaion. Wow. Oh well, I can't un-publish this post.
Hope you like the change of topic!
Here goes.

I know. Most people don't want to think about anything to do with winter right now. But, since I send out quite a few Christmas cards I HAVE to start early!

I got my inspiration for all of these cards from several cards designed by Maile Belles. Her clean and simple, yet elegant style, always manages to inspire me. Love her cards!
HERE is a link to her blog.
And HERE is a link to the post that inspired my first group set of cards.
These last 2 photos are closeups of some of the cards above. Maybe you can see a bit better, the card stock layered triangles I added.

Next is a set of cards, all using the same Christmas tree die set and the same sentiment. I just changed up the placement of the patterned papers on the trees. I used a combo of score tape and foam tape to layer the sections of the tree, to add some dimension.
I also talked how I
was working on not pushing myself to be so busy. Well, that's still a
work in progress. Friday was an extremely busy day for me. It began
with an early morning walk, about 4 miles I think.
I hurried to
eat breakfast, got myself ready and headed out to do our shopping. Lots
of stops. Home around noon and ate a quick (but healthy) lunch.

Then
the real work started. We did a week's worth of laundry. I did food
prep, cooking, etc ALL afternoon. Yes, I have my breakfast and lunch
foods ready for the coming work week. But. I was worn out. Exhausted.

Yup,
I did it to myself again. Pushing myself to "do". I usually do some
of my food prep Friday evening and the remainder on Saturday. But, I
had invited a friend (who is also my cousin) to come over on Saturday to
do some stamping (paper crafting...usually greeting cards) with me.
Oh, and I still hadn't done any house cleaning, since nearly every work
night last week was "busy". Guilty again. :(

Can I not practice what I preach??? Yikes!

Anyway.
On Saturday morning I made the decision that whatever cleaning my hubby
and I could get done, would be enough. Hey, the floors got swept and
mopped. That felt like "good" to me!
Once I told myself to stop and realize "enough is enough", I relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the day.

While
I waited for my stamping buddy Cheryl, I finally sat down and relaxed.
Watched a bit of TV with my hubby. Browsed some stamping blogs for
card ideas. I was relaxed and ready to create when Cheryl arrived.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh.
I had a wonderful time creating and talking....really talking (about
lots of stuff) on Saturday. Those hours of conversation and creating
were good for my soul. I love creating, but I love it even more when I
get the chance to spend time creating with a friend (or 3 or 4 when I
get the chance!). I felt so happy, calmed and re-energized. I'm still
smiling now, as I write this post, early Sunday morning. :)

Do what brings you joy. Oh, and while you're at it...remind me to do the same. Often. Okay?

Later,
The topic of this post was planted in my brain a couple of days ago, during a conversation with my friend Kris. I was telling her how busy I usually am on Saturdays, doing my meal prep for the coming work week.
I told her that sometimes I feel this sense of resentment that I "have to" spend so much time cooking.

Well, guess who puts the pressure on me to do that meal prep? Me. I got to thinking about the pressure I put on myself to do so many things. Going, doing, joining....always busy, busy, busy.
I catch myself sometimes comparing others lives to mine. Is my busy more important than yours? Am I busier than you? Does that make me more important than you?

Those are NOT thoughts that I want in my brain and that is NOT what God wants for me, either.

On a regular basis, I've had to stop and re-evaluate my priorities. I don't want to be so busy that I can't enjoy life. So busy that I don't see and enjoy all of the blessings that surround me. All of the beauty that surrounds me. So busy that I don't have the time to do the things that bring me joy.

About a year and a half ago, I made the decision to step down from a card challenge design team that I was a member of. It was something that I enjoyed. But, since I had adopted a healthy lifestyle, much more of my weekend time was spent on food prep (cooking from scratch, using mostly whole foods) and distance walking. Something had to "give". It was actually an easy choice to make. My priority had to be my health. I haven't regretted the decision for a minute.

I'm gradually finding ways to pare down the time I spend in the kitchen. Hey...I finally bought a food processor! My husband had given me the nickname Chopper, because I spent SO much time chopping vegetables. Oh my goodness. That Cuisinart is awesome! Why did it not occur to me to buy one a year and a half ago?

Ok, back to the subject of busy. I've read two articles recently that talk about this subject and those writers say it all, much better than I can.
Taming The Busyness of Life
Everyone is Busier Than You
I'm sure I'm not the only one who can relate to this subject. If any of this relates to you, I hope you'll read these articles. They're so well written and both gave me a lot to think about.

I don't want to be so busy that I get to the point that I'm don't have joy in my life. So busy that I'm not creating joy in my life and joy in the life of others. I need to stop, be still and find joy.
I have to make time for the really important things in my life. I (and you) don't have to "do it all".

Just one more graphic; this one really spoke to me. Exactly when I needed to hear it.
Been hearing a few of your friends talk about doing races? Are you considering signing up for a race?

I know. That's a lot of questions.

If you've been considering participating in a race, I strongly urge you to...do it! The feeling I get when I cross the finish line is such a "high" for me. What a sense of accomplishment. I did it! I finished! I gotta tell you, racing can be habit forming.

You can make it as competitive as you want. Or you can do it to compete only with yourself. Whichever you choose, it can be such a confidence builder. Oh...and don't think that you have to be in top physical shape to participate in a race. You'll see that people of all ages, fitness levels and body types do these races.

I've said it before...I'll probably never win a medal for 1st, 2nd or even 3rd place. That's okay with me, since I love competing with me. Working at shaving a minute or so off my previous minutes per mile. Heck, maybe even a few seconds.

All this being said, my most recent race was last Saturday. I have to say, this one was different than any of the others I've done. It was The Biggest Loser Run/Walk Race 2015. These races are held in many cities across the USA. The one I walked was in Rockford, IL. HERE is a link to the BL website.
The other races I've done were pretty low-key compared to this one. Packet pick-up (your race day bib, t-shirt and various other goodies) was the evening before. But in addition to our packets, there were merchandise booths and various speakers. I'm always excited about an upcoming race, but this bumped up that excitement even more.

I got to the race venue quite early the next morning, since I know that this part of downtown Rockford has limited parking. Quite a few parking lots and garages but they would fill up quickly for an event like this. By the way, there were 921 runners/walkers in this race. Wow.

Several of the Biggest Loser show contestants and a trainer spoke before the race and then as the start time neared, they moved to the stage near the starting line. Lots of encouragement and lots of humor, made for a very motivating start to the race!

Later, as we neared the finish line, I could see that Sonya Jones was there cheering on each and every one of us as we finished. That was so cool! Especially considering that I have never even watched The Biggest Loser TV show. I had to do a bit of research on line to see who these people were. :)

It was just such a positive, uplifting experience. As I said, other races I've done are not as "hyped" as this race series. BUT each and every one of them has been a great experience for me. I'm ready for another one. Oh yeah.

The Biggest Loser Race website uploaded the photos from Saturday's race today. I keyed in my race bib number to look for my photos. Well, there are 7 or 8 of them. But...in most of them I had a very stern (or maybe even a grimaced) expression on my face. Ugh! In two photos my eyes were closed. Geesh!
I finally found two that aren't too bad. These are both at the finish line...and I finally smiled!
I finished in about the same time as the race I walked a couple of weeks ago. I was pleased with that, because it was an improvement from my race times last year. This race included a couple pretty steep hills (or maybe they just seemed steep!), so those slowed me down for a while.

So, have I talked you into signing up for a 5k? Maybe? Talk a friend into signing up with you and it's even more fun. You can find races in your area by doing a google search for races by state. I'm just sayin'. :)
Not just because I was NOT athletic, but because I was overweight, too. Yeah, those two things made any kind of sports difficult. Along with that I was SO self conscious about the way I looked when I tried to participate in any sports. All of those issues, along with low self esteem and being extremely introverted made PE not a fun place to be.

I am not looking for sympathy, at all. That was simply who I was at that time in my life. That person is so different from who I am now. So different! During those years after high school I began to break out of that "shell", thank goodness. Gradually I became much more social and outgoing, made more friends and eventually met the wonderful man who is now my husband. He has told me many times that when we first met, he could hardly get me to talk...but now I won't shut up! I take that as a compliment!!!

All of this is leading up to (or back to) my weight. About 6 months before I met my husband I finally decided it was time to lose weight. I succeeded, but didn't do it the right way. It was "dieting". Just a way to get to my goal weight. I didn't exercise. I didn't think of it as changing my lifestyle, at all.
So. Guess what happened? That's right, I gradually regained the weight.

I repeated that process a few more times over the years. Again, I didn't make changes for my "lifetime" It was just dieting. I've come to dislike that word. Diet.

In 2013 I finally made the decision to make permanent changes to the way I eat and my activity level. Major changes! If you've just now started reading my blog, you can follow THIS LINK to read more about how and why I started.

Well, by now you're probably wondering if I'll ever get to the title of this post. Racing.
It all goes back to the first few sentences of this post. PE class. Sports. Physical activity.

If anyone had told me, all of those years ago, that I would now be participating in races...well I would have told them they were crazy. Me? Race? Voluntarily, even!

Oh my, how my life has changed...in so many ways. I am SO active now and I have been active since August of 2013. You know what? I now LOVE being active! If you're one of my Facebook friends you also know that I like competing with myself, too. Doing more steps and increasing the distance I walk, whenever I can. Especially when I can walk outdoors. Fresh air and sunshine.

But the point that I really want to make, is that I don't do these 5k races in the hopes of winning. I know that I won't ever win a medal. That's just fine with me. I do it for a few reasons.
1. Being a part of that crowd of participants, all working toward that finish line.
2. The activity of speed walking is fun.
3. Trying my best to improve my time (minutes per mile).
4. The fun of doing a race with a friend or relative, even though we get separated during the race.
5. Seeing if I can pass a few other walkers along the way (I will admit that I like that!).
6 And, best of all....CROSSING THE FINISH LINE!

I did a 5k race today and I'm already looking forward to the next one. Just 2 weeks away!

I hope that I am able to continue to walk 5k races (maybe a 10k occasionally) for many years to come. Being active makes me feel so good. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

Who knew, all those years ago, that I could and would make so many changes to my life?
What kind of changes have you made, that have surprised you? Or, what kind of changes are you contemplating? Anything is possible, you know.
In fact, I made a a pot of it today. And...delayed my lunch time just to wait for the soup to be finished. Mmmmm...it was SO good.

In one of my earlier blog post's I talked about The Doctor's Diet, a book written by Dr. Travis Stork. It's chock full of information about health and nutrition. Maybe I shouldn't tell you this. But, I don't lend out my copy of the book to anyone. Maybe that's a bit selfish, but I want to be able to refer to the book at any time. Sorry. It's mine.

I haven't yet bought The Doctor's Diet Cookbook, by the same author. But I got the chance to borrow it from a co-worker last winter. The recipe I'm sharing today, is from that cookbook.

"Not Just Chicken" Chicken Soup (I just call it Chicken Veggie Soup)
Here's a pic of the batch I made today.

I've tried to determine the best way to share this recipe, since I don't have a link to the recipe. Since it's in a cookbook, it isn't posted online. I typed up the recipe in MS Word, then scanned it to convert it to a .jpeg file. So. Here it is. I don't know what size it will print or how clear the print will be.
Give it a try, then please let me know in the comments...or email me through the "contact me" area in the blog sidebar. I'll figure out something else if this isn't working well.

I usually make a slightly larger batch than this original, so that I can share. I simple add extra broth and veggies (love my veggies!) and maybe 1 more chicken breast. In fact, even if I make a single batch I always add more veggies than the recipe calls for. Always!

This soup reheats so well. In fact, I think it's tastier the day after I make it. The seasonings and flavors have time to blend and get, well...yummier.
This soup is one of my go-to work lunches. I enjoy having a hot lunch at work and it feels like comfort food, without the guilt. Low-fat, low sodium and full of vegetables, chicken and whole grain.

I hope you'll give this recipe a try. If you do, please let me know what you think of it.
It's a nice light summer-time salad.

Follow the link above to get the recipe.
That's a photo of the salad I made last week for a family gathering. This salad keeps well, surprisingly. The leftovers didn't get soggy or water-y in the fridge. That's important, since I enjoy leftovers!

If you've been reading my blog, you know that I love to prep ahead. I don't mind eating the same foods several days in a row, as long as it's something yummy. This is.

By the way, I've been logging the food I consume, using my FitBit app. Among other things, FitBit totals my intake of carbs, fats, protein and calories. I've been surprised at my carb totals. It's been a little higher than I thought it actually was. Since I usually stay away from simple carbs, mine are complex carbs, for the most part. Still...I was surprised. It can take some time to log in everything I eat, but having the information at my fingertips helps me to make better decisions about what I eat.

FitBit also shows me a comparison of the calories I've consumed and the calories I've burned that day. Sometimes I realize that I'd better get moving and add more steps! Once in a while I have a calorie deficit. That hasn't happened often, though!

That reminds me that I wanted to share something fun with you. Last Friday, I walked on my treadmill before heading out to shop, then to the family farms (my brothers-in-law farms). After lunch, one of my sis-in-law had to run an errand. I asked my other sis-in-law to walk out towards the woods with me, since the weather was SO perfect. Sunny and in the 70's with a light breeze.

Later, after I got home I decided to add some more steps to my day. I headed outside again.
After a while I realized how close I was to setting a personal record for me. So, pushed a little further.

I walked 24,043 steps that day. If I remember correctly, that was just over 10 miles.
My previous record was just over 21,000.
That was so exciting for me and it was fun to compete with...me!

So, I needed to find a good way to use a couple of them...soon. The next day I happened upon the following recipe and last Sunday I tried it.

I'm always on the lookout for more healthy recipes to add to my collection. Happily, this dish was a success. So...it's a keeper! I'll be taking a bowl of it in my work lunch each day this week, along with a boiled egg, since it's important to include protein as a part of each meal.
Actually, I should call my version...Sweet Potato and Spinach Skillet. Here's a photo of my version.
I substituted spinach since I didn't have any kale in my fridge and truthfully, I have yet to try kale. I know that it's supposed to be a "super food", so I really should try some. Have you tried it? If so, what is your favorite way to eat it? Please share.

Once I did all my chopping (my husband says I can probably chop in my sleep, since I do so much of it!), things moved right along. Since the potato is chopped into such small pieces, it cooked quickly.

That's it for today. I'll be back soon to share a broccoli salad recipe that is a favorite of mine. A great summer side dish!
Later,
